Timeline & Platform
2 weeks for responsive web
Onboard all users without using the development team.
Centralizing our Investing Accounts at CrowdStreet took longer than expected, so we got creative and chose to employ Appcues in a fun experiment. The goal was to onboard all users and provide them with some hands-on assistance by educating them and assisting them in setting up their profiles and investing accounts so they are prepared to invest as soon as their preferred offer becomes available for investment.
Workshops
After creating a workflow, user-testing was used to capture initial first-time user reactions. The reactions prompted a second workflow. This was a perfect moment to use split.io in an A/B experiment.
Workflow A
Take the user on a journey that only ends when the entire workflow is completed or until the opt-out then gives them the menu to choose from.
Workflow B
Give the user a menu from the get-go and let them control the onboarding on their time.
Success Metrics
Workflow B had a much higher completion rate of 80% vs 42% with workflow A. Workflow B was pushed to the entire user base and became our primary tool for the educational part of our progressive onboarding at CrowdStreet.
Workflow A (42%) ~ Workflow B (80%)
Key takeaways:
Product and Design can partner to run experiments outside of having to work with code.
Jump off the deep end and get crafty even in a corporate setting.
Partnering with multiple teams around an experiment involving a lot of legal copy and documents brings a lot of unity to teams.
Short-term experiments can actually work.
